Smith Broughton Auctioneers

the client

Smith Broughton Industrial Auctioneers is an industrial equipment remarketing company based in Midland, Western Australia. Established in 1977, Smith Broughton provides asset realisation services to leading resource companies, contractors, financial institutions and government agencies.

the challenge

Following the devastating 2016 WA bushfires in Yarloop and Waroona, Smith Broughton launched an online charity auction to raise money for those affected through the Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund. The goods for auction – all unreserved – ranged from industrial and mining equipment such as a brand new Hyundai forklift valued at $25,000 to sports and music collectables including a guitar signed by Slash from Guns N’ Roses. To assist with the promotion of Smith Broughton’s WA Bushfire Charity Auction, Hyperactive Digital offered its services pro bono.

our solution

Despite having just two weeks to build some buzz, we were able to work with our online media partners to gain publicity at no cost to our client. We negotiated more than $20,000 worth of online advertising and publicity exposure including display banners on gumtree.com.au, thewest.com.au, miningmonthly.com and miningnews.net as well as coverage in the MiningNews e-newsletter. We also gained exposure with a panel display on the auction page at infomine.com – all at no charge.

the lesson

Through strong relationships with online media channels, your digital agency can be a valuable ally when it comes to negotiating publicity for a charity event at no charge. With Hyperactive Digital’s help,  Smith Broughton’s WA Bushfire Charity Auction was successful in raising over $58,000 for victims of the 2016 WA bushfires.
